Empretec is an international program of the United Nations, promoted by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) , conceived and designed to identify, train and support entrepreneurs. The design of this program was first presented in England in 1985 and since 1988 it has been implemented in various regions of the world with the support of UNCTAD, as a valuable instrument to promote economic and social development through the creation of companies.

The Programme aims to increase production capacity and international competitiveness in favour of economic development, poverty eradication and equitable participation of developing countries in the global economy.

Empretec is a mechanism for promoting behavioural change in a select group of promising entrepreneurs; it also helps these entrepreneurs to put their ideas into practice and contributes to the development of start-up companies.

About what
what is it about?

Empretec 's main product , the Entrepreneurship Training Workshop, is based on research conducted by Harvard University psychologist Professor David McClelland, who had done extensive work on entrepreneurship.

Participants in the program are selected through targeted interviews on the basis of their proven personal entrepreneurial competencies and innovative approach to business.

The Empretec programme has the capacity to address other target groups of entrepreneurs (from business leaders and public sectors, to entrepreneurs with limited literacy, as well as women entrepreneurs and company employees with important projects to be implemented).

The Empretec methodology It sets out ten key areas of competence related to business development: seeking opportunities and initiative; persistence; meeting commitments; demanding quality and efficiency; calculated risks; setting objectives; seeking information; systematic planning and monitoring; persuasion and contacts; and independence and self-confidence.

Empretec workshops (taught with a minimum of 30 and a maximum of 35 participants) focus on the attitudes of the participants and aim to promote a change in their behaviour by combining two aspects: self-knowledge and self-directed change.

The training modules have been structured around three personal components: achievement, planning and power. They are implemented through experiential learning, by developing a wide range of experimental resources: games, tests, visualizations, videos, debates, plenary discussions and case analysis.

The workshop is held over 52 hours, spread over six consecutive training days (Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and course participants are required to devote their full attention to the development of the workshop. In many cases, participants may be required to devote additional time to structuring their project.
