ADDRESS
CELIEM: First
Empretec Center
in Costa Rica
Our work and experience in strengthening micro, small and medium-sized enterprises allowed us to become the Costa Rican organization accredited by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) to operate this center in the country after the mediation of the Government of the Republic in November 2021 through the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Commerce (MEIC); receiving the approval from Rebeca Grynspan, Secretary General of UNCTAD in January 2022.
The designation of an Empretec Centre is only granted to one public or private organization per UN member country at the request of the government of the country concerned.
At CELIEM we are very excited to implement a process of quality and prestige such as the UNCTAD Empretec Program in Costa Rica.
This accreditation made us the 41st Empretec Center operating in the world, opening up a great opportunity not only to strengthen the skills and behaviors of Costa Rican entrepreneurs, but also to contribute to increasing the capacities of the actors who are part of the entrepreneurial ecosystem in our country.
2023 was our first year as an Empretec Center, which allowed us to develop seven workshops in different areas of the country.
This workshop must be delivered by two UNCTAD-certified facilitators to ensure the correct application of the methodology used in the programme.
During the first year of the program's implementation in Costa Rica, it was possible to identify potential facilitators who, once their training process was completed, would be responsible for teaching the workshop.

Our evolution as an Empretec Center went beyond holding workshops in strategic areas of the country. We decided to scale up and applied to host the Empretec Global Forum and the Annual Meeting of Empretec Center Directors 2024.
Hosting this global meeting will allow us to bring together 34 delegates from countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America with the goal of learning about good entrepreneurial practices, but especially to strengthen regional entrepreneurship networks with policies that enhance the contribution of these centers to the national and regional MSME ecosystem.
